The Etape du tour 2026: The Ultimate Challenge for Cycling Enthusiasts

Every summer, thousands of passionate cyclists gather in the French Alps or Pyrenees for a once-in-a-lifetime ride — the Étape du Tour. This unique event allows amateur riders to pedal the same roads, face the same climbs, and feel the same atmosphere as the pros of the Tour de France.

If you’ve ever dreamed of riding shoulder-to-shoulder with other dedicated cyclists while surrounded by stunning French landscapes, the Étape du Tour is the challenge you’ve been waiting for.

On the 19th July 2026 around 16,000 amateur cyclists will attempt to ride 170km with 5,400m of elevation gain, which is stage number 20 of the 2026 Tour de France.

The start point is in Le Bourg d’Oisans and the route continues to Col de la Croix de Fer (2067m ASL), Col du Télégraphe (1566m ASL) then over the mighty Col du Galibier at 2,642m ASL. There is a long descent to recover from all the ascending until you arrive at the Chambon dam then the climbing starts again up Col de Sarenne (1,999m ASL) to finish at the iconic Alpe d’Huez.

What Is the Étape du Tour?

First held in 1993, the Étape du Tour offers cyclists the opportunity to experience a fully closed-road stage of the Tour de France under official race conditions. Each year, the route changes to mirror one of the toughest mountain stages from the current Tour — complete with legendary climbs like Alpe d’Huez, Col du Galibier, or Mont Ventoux.

Key Facts:

  • Distance: Between 120–180 km (depending on the year)
  • Total elevation: Often 3,000–4,500 m
  • Participants: Over 15,000 passionate cyclists from around the world

How to Prepare for the Étape du Tour

Preparation is crucial to enjoy — and complete — this demanding event. Training should begin months in advance and focus on endurance, climbing, and recovery.

Training Tips:

  • Follow a structured training plan combining long rides and hill intervals.
  • Simulate race conditions by riding consecutive days with elevation gain.
  • Don’t neglect nutrition and equipment — lightweight gear and proper fuel make a huge difference.

Pro Tip: If you live far from mountainous terrain, consider indoor cycling apps like Zwift to practice sustained climbs virtually!

Travel and Accommodation Tips

Many riders base themselves in nearby towns such as Annecy, Grenoble, or Briançon, depending on the stage location. Booking early is essential — accommodations fill up months ahead.

For hassle-free travel, look for organized cycling tours or Étape du Tour packages that include bike transport, mechanical support, and local guides.

Why Ride the Étape du Tour?

Riding the Étape is not just about physical endurance — it’s about community, passion, and the pride of conquering the same slopes that challenge cycling’s elite. It’s an emotional journey filled with unforgettable moments, incredible scenery, and the pure joy of reaching the final finish line.
